ABOUT the young scholars fund

Our founder, Shawn Yancy knows what it takes to finish college as a young mom.

While raising her baby, she carried a full course load and finished a semester early. She made it because her parents helped with diapers, formula, and tuition, and they encouraged her every step of the way.

The Young Scholars Fund provides support for young mothers in college, including help with tuition, childcare, diapers, groceries, textbooks and required course materials, plus mentoring.

STUDENT PARENTS ON CAMPUS

Student parents often have difficulty meeting basic needs. Compared to their non-parenting peers, parenting students were at a higher risk of basic needs insecurity.

• Nearly 10% – 1.7 million of all U.S. undergraduate students are single mothers.

• Single mothers with a high school diploma in the U.S. are 1.8 times more likely to live in poverty than when they hold an associate degree, and 3 times more likely to live in poverty than when they hold a bachelor’s degree.

• 9 in 10 single mother students live at or near the poverty line.

• 3 in 5 student parents have been housing insecure, compared to 4 in 10 of their peers.

• Approximately 44% of student parents have had low or very low food security, versus 42% of non-parent students.
